At 3:00 a.m., Sylvia met Carol and Art Ford for dancing in the Village jazz clubs—Art only pretended to be a cowboy. Sylvia had already played the Queen of Hearts that night with Mel, and now comfortably slipped into the role of Lady in Waiting. She danced, drank, and reveled in this new side of New York—the girls who wouldn’t dream of wearing nylons in summer and the men with fluffy hair and untucked shirts. She got an undeniable thrill out of all this, and she was happy to see more of the city despite the late hour and the looming 9:00 a.m. workday.
It was after 5:00 a.m. before Sylvia began to make her way back to the Barbizon—on foot. Sylvia never shook off her mother’s stark frugality—she shunned taxis and thought nothing of the dark walk from Greenwich Village all the way up Lexington Avenue. Clothes were a different matter. Sylvia would rather sweat it out on the streets of New York or hitchhike, then splurge on the perfect cashmere sweater, or a beautiful brocade coat. Out of recklessness and prudence, Sylvia walked alone like a lynx, then fell into a deep sleep in her Barbizon bed.
After all, she was used to this sort of thing—swilling brandy until it spilled into dawn.
Money goes like water here, and I rebel against ever taking taxis, but walk everywhere.
